Sunset in the Woods

Help us to keep our forests alive!

Plant your own tree in Kenya with Green Shimoni Initiative

Green Shimoni Initiative believes that a single action can make a difference in the community, and that collective action can greatly impact the world. Through advocacy and outreach activities, our team works each day to contribute their part to environmental protection.

Who We Are

Trees are the longest living organisms on planet Earth and also the largest natural resource. Almost a third of the earth's surface is covered by forests, which are home to more than half of the world's native animal and plant species and around 300 million people.

But our forests are in crisis. Our planet has already lost almost 40% of its surface area in the last three centuries - and every year it loses another 33,000 square kilometres (about five football pitches) per minute.

The goal of Green Shimoni Initiatives is to create a culture of environmental awareness and protection and empower Shimoni to become a community whose inhabitants have sufficient knowledge and practical skills to understand and mitigate the effects of climate change in a timely manner.

Our community-based projects will show that it is possible to achieve the difficult balance between development and conservation by involving the local population. Economic development must be accompanied by appreciation and protection of the environment.

Green Shimoni Tree Farm

Green Shimoni Initiative plants approximately 4500 Eucalyptus and Casuarina trees on our Green Shimoni Tree Farm, which are very suitable for the special soil conditions of the coastal area of Kenya.

The trees will continiously produce seeds, from which we will grow new seedlings and distribut them free of charge to members of the community upon request.

The seedlings will be planted on the land of the community under our guidance to achieve a higher tree density in the region.

We will also inform ourselve frequently about other tree species that can thrive under the given local climatic conditions.

Environmental School Clubs

Green Shimoni Initiative has founded environmental School Clubs in the region. These serve as a starting point for the dissemination of information about the need for and advantages of environmental protection, starting from the youth, to the families.

Monthly meetings are held at the school with a member of the Green Shimoni Tree Farm team. During these meetings, knowledge about climate change, environmental protection and positive features of trees are taught and developed together with the students in open discussions.

Moreover we plant fruit and shade trees on the school compound together with the students. These trees may not be cut down and additionally serve as a supplier of healthy snacks.

We are in contact with more schools in the region to win them over to participate in our projects.

Green Shimoni Seminars

As southern Kenya is vulnerable to droughts and floods, sustainable production of local food must be ensured.

Quarterly seminars are being organised by Gereen Shimoni Initiative to exchange information between the small-scale farmers in the community and the Green Shimoni Tree Farm team. Topics such as agroforestry, climate change, environmental protection will be covered.

Agriculture is the backbone of Kenya's economy, of which more than 58% directly or indirectly earn their living. Knowledge and skills are imparted to reconcile agricultural use and environmental protection, in order to ensure a stable income.
